Burke
joined the 5th Battalion Connaught Rangers. In August, 1915, Burke
was engaged in a charge in Gallipoli and was reported killed after he was shot
through the head and received wounds to his leg. The report proved mistaken and
he made a recovery. However, his younger brother, who was at the head of the
leading company in the same charge, was killed. Frank received special
compliments from his Commanding Officer for the great dash he displayed.
Burke
was in Dublin during the Easter rebellion and The Belvederian of 1916 reported that he ‘took a prominent part in
the military operations during Easter Week in Dublin.’
In
The Belvederian of 1916 John Burke,
brother of Frank, was mentioned: He was said to have spent over a year at the
front and
twice
refused a commission in an infantry regiment. He has now accepted one in the
artillery and is a cadet in training.
